How to use the Idea Catalog
  • Three M Tool has a rich history of designing and building very unique custom fabricated wire products.  Many of our projects have been baskets and racks for cleaning, heat treating or part sorting, but countless other applications exist.

  • This Idea Catalog is a collection of interesting projects. Each project was selected to show an innovative solution to a specific design challenge. It’s unlikely that your application will be identical to any of those shown, so as you page through the catalog try to get a feel for some of the basic design features that could be applied to your application.  Use the terms and concepts shown here as a starting point to discuss your needs with us.

  • Navigation through the Idea Catalog:
    • The Navigation Tool Bar at the bottom will allow you to move forward and backward through the screens:
      • Start: Jumps to the first page of the Catalog (with contact information).
      • Prev: Moves back one page.
      • Return to Last: Returns to the last page, usually returning to a hypertext description.
      • Next: Moves forward one page.
      • End: Exits the Catalog.

    • Hypertext links are included in the text definitions to jump to examples. “Return to Last” button on the navigation tool bar will return to the originating hypertext.

Base Material Selection Considerations
  • Every project’s design is a trade off between different material characteristics: weight versus strength, cost versus corrosion resistance, etc.  We strive to optimize these trade-offs by thoroughly understanding each material’s strengths and weaknesses to create the best balance for each application.  Below is a very broad overview of design characteristics for some of the materials we typically use.

  • Base Material Characteristics (Common materials used, limitless other options available):
    • Carbon Steel: Strong and inexpensive, readily available in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, and is very easy to form and weld.  Very limited corrosion resistance in natural finish. It can be plated or powder coated for some additional corrosion protection, but is generally not recommended for wet locations, ultrasonic or aqueous cleaning applications. Carbon steel is a great choice for manual solvent cleaning, oil dipping and indoor material handling applications.
    • 304 Stainless Steel:  The most common of the industrial stainless steel grades. It’s readily available in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, relatively easy to form and weld. Good high temperature strength to 1200°F.  Good corrosion resistance in wet and mildly caustic environments. Can be powder coated for added part protection. Electropolishing is recommended for all ultrasonic applications.
    • 316 Stainless Steel:  Stronger, better corrosion resistance and better high temperature strength than 304 stainless.  Available in most shapes. Still relatively easy to form and weld. Good high temperature strength to 1600°F.  Good corrosion resistance in salt water, acidic and alkaline environments. Can be powder coated for added part protection. Electropolishing is recommended for all ultrasonic applications.
    • 330 Stainless Steel: Better high temperature strength than 304 and 316 stainless.  Limited selection of shapes available. Higher nickel content makes it more difficult to form and weld. Good high temperature strength to 2200°F.  Good corrosion resistance in acidic and alkaline environments.
    • Other materials : Obviously, there are an unlimited number of other metals with enhanced properties for greater strength, lighter weight, better corrosion resistance, etc.
4
Surface Finish and Coating Considerations
  • Surface finishes and coatings can be added to improve the characteristics of the base metals, protect parts, or for cosmetic reasons.
  • Surface Finishes for Base Materials (Common processes used, many other options available):
    • Natural Finish: The natural condition of the base material.  All products are deburred to remove any sharp edges, but discoloration around welds and light process oils will remain on the parts.
    • Electropolished Surface:  (Stainless Steel only) An electro-chemical dipping process to remove all free iron from the top layer of material, leaving the surface very rich in nickel and chrome. The resulting surface is very smooth and hard, and very shiny. Electropolishing is recommended for any ultrasonic cleaning applications.
  • Surface Coatings applied to Base Materials (Coatings are not recommended for mesh finer than 10 mesh)
    • Plastisol Dip Coating: A dipping process to coat surfaces with soft vinyl in a wide variety of colors. The vinyl coatings have limited chemical and abrasion resistance and are generally used to improve the grip of handles or for identification or cosmetic reasons only.
    • Powder Coating:  Parts are coated with “powder” then baked to form a smooth, even surface.  A wide selection of powders are available with different characteristics:
      • Epoxy Powder Coating: Epoxy coatings are inexpensive and come in a wide variety of colors, but have limited chemical and abrasion resistance. They are generally only used for cosmetic or identification reasons. (Epoxy coatings are generally .007” to .015” thick.)
      • Polypropylene  Powder Coating: Polypropylene coatings have good chemical resistance with fair abrasion resistance, and come in a limited variety of colors. Polypropylene is slightly “softer” than nylon to protect parts. (Polypropylene coatings are generally .010” to .020” thick.)
      • Nylon Powder Coating: Nylon coatings have good chemical and abrasion resistance, and come in a wide variety of colors. Nylon is generally used to “soften” a surface to protect parts. (Nylon coatings are generally .010” to .020” thick.)
      • Teflon Powder Coating: Teflon coatings have excellent chemical resistance and good abrasion resistance. All Teflon is dark grey and is used by us to “soften” a surface to protect parts in more caustic environments. (Teflon coatings are generally .010” to .020” thick.)

5
Lining Material Considerations
  • Most baskets are lined with either woven wire mesh, welded wire mesh, expanded metal, or perforated steel. Each lining material has distinct advantages and disadvantages.
  • Wire Mesh Designated by “Mesh Number” (number of wires per inch) and “Wire Diameter” (the diameter of each wire). The opening size is approximately 1/(Mesh Number) minus (Wire Diameter).
    • Welded Wire Mesh: Cross wires are laid on top of long wires and are resistance welded together at each intersection creating very even square openings. Welded mesh is more rigid (less flexible) than woven wire mesh.  Typical welded wire mesh is 6 mesh or larger, and is .047” diameter wire or greater.
    • Woven Wire Mesh:  Wires are woven, over-under-over-under, to create mesh that is more flexible than welded mesh. This flexibility allows woven mesh to be formed into one-piece bowls or pans. There is also an almost unlimited selection of woven wire mesh sizes and wire diameters.
  • Perforated Metal Solid sheet metal with typically round holes punched in even rows. Hole diameters are rarely smaller than the material thickness. Perforated metals are designated by hole diameter, hole spacing, and material thickness. Readily available in carbon and 304 stainless steel, with limited sizes in other materials. This is the best lining choice for a very smooth surface, but typically has less open space than wire mesh or expanded metal.
  • Expanded Metal Solid sheet metal that is slit and pulled open (expanded) to create a sheet of diamond shaped openings. Designated by diamond size and material thickness.
    • Expanded Metal (standard): Very inexpensive material.  The surface of the sheet is rough and the edges of the diamond-shaped holes have many sharp edges that should be considered in the design process.  Best choice for low cost, if the rough surface can be tolerated.
    • Flattened Expanded Metal: Standard expanded metal is rolled (“Flattened”) to create a smoother sheet with fewer burrs and sharp edges, although the diamond-shaped holes will still have some sharp edges that should be considered in the design process.

6
Other Design Considerations
  • Basket Lids: Some applications require lids to retain parts that could be pushed out by strong cleaning spray, fall out during rotation or transport, or float out when immersed. Several basic lid designs are available.
    • Removable Lid: The simplest style of lid. Can be a “Drop-in” style that fits inside the basket, or a “Shoe Box” style lid where the frame of the lid is angled to sit over the top edge of the basket.
    • Hinged Lid: Simple lid with hinges on one side.  Leaves free space above parts.  Can include various styles of latches to secure the lid closed.
    • Compression Lid:  A lid that’s designed to fit inside the basket to press against the parts and “compress” them. Spring loaded pins engage holes in the basket sides to secure the lids at various heights.
  • Lifting and Handling Considerations Features can be included to improve the handling of baskets.
    • Manual Lifting: Smaller baskets with lighter loads are typically handled manually. Some typical options for manual lifting handles can be small hand loops on two sides called “Dual Grip Handles”, or folding loops on two ends called “Drop Handles”, or single (or double) loops hinged to swing clear for part loading called “Swinging Loop Handles”.  Manual handles can be made extra long for deep tanks, or eliminated altogether for small baskets.
    • Robotic Lifting: Many automated cleaning lines use a programmable overhead robot (sometimes called a “TDR” for Two Dimensional Robot) to move baskets through the process. “TDR Handles” must be a uniform height and will be shaped to help the robot grab and center the load.
    • Fork Truck Handling: For large or heavy loads, stacking feet can be included to allow four-way pick-up and stacking with a fork truck.
    • Hoist Lifting: Many tank dipping processes use a hoist or crane to move the baskets. Lifting loops or handles on these baskets must be strong enough to handle the loads safely and should include a shape or V-notch that keeps the hook centered.
    • Conveyor Line Handling: Whenever a basket will be used on a roller conveyor, it should include an extra cross bar support on the bottom surface called a “Conveyor Bottom” to move smoothly without getting hung up between the individual rollers.
